Summary:
Dizziness and unsteadiness is not always explained by a medical or neurological condition. Medically unexplained dizziness and unsteadiness is often associated with anxiety. Serotonin active agents (SSRIs) are effective in the treatment of anxiety associated dizziness and unsteadiness. Phobic postural vertigo (PPV) is characterized by unsteadiness and dizziness when standing, and is not due to vestibular etiology. Treatment of PPV with CBT improves function and reduces anxiety and depressive symptoms but has limited effect on the experience of dizziness and unsteadiness. The treatment of patients with PPV should include a combination of psychological, medical and physiotherapeutic interventions.
