Summary:
Contact allergy to chemical substances in cosmetics, chemical products and other consumer products is prevalent in the general population and in certain occupational risk groups. Approximately 15% of adults in Europe are sensitised and may develop allergic contact dermatitis on the hands, face and body. European legislation on chemicals and on cosmetics is used increasingly for the prevention of allergic contact dermatitis. Mandatory labelling, classification, limitations, and ban on skin sensitisers in different product types are useful tools. It is suggested that European legislation and also national regulations concerning occupational exposure should be further developed and applied, for more effective prevention of contact dermatitis.
