Summary:
Approximately 4% of the general population suffers from chronic daily headache (CDH), which is a generic term for a group of different disorders. The epidemiology, present knowledge on pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and guidelines for treatment of chronic tension-type headache and medication overuse headache are reviewed. There is also a discussion on the fact that, in Sweden, 9% of migraineurs do not recover between attacks, commonly as a result of chronic migraine. The first Swedish case series of new daily persistent headache is presented. Studies are highlighted in support of the joint use of non-pharmacological strategies and medication in the treatment of CDH.
