Summary:
In Sweden principles for prioritization of total hip- and knee arthroplasty have not resulted in equally high frequency of surgical procedures throughout the country. By direction of The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) we have evaluated alternative ways to address this problem. We suggest that priority is based on self-reported life quality and local symptoms according to validated questionnaires and standardized results from a clinical examination.
