Summary:
Evidence that Motivational interviewing (MI) facilitates change of harmful life style behaviors is briefly reviewed. The method has gained considerable momentum in Sweden and staff in social services, prison and probation as well as health care are beeing trained in MI. MI is based on four simple principles which, however, seem to be quite hard to practice in daily routine work. A valuable tool for implementing MI to applied treatment settings might be a test of MI integrity. A Coding laboratory has been established at Karolinska Institutet to serve as a partner to MI developement for practioners, MI trainers and researchers. In medical care brief adaptaitions of MI seem to enhance the effectiveness of the care as an alternative to traditional advice giving. However, to practice evidence based MI in daily health care there is a need for an implementation strategy.
