Titel: Manlig osteoporos - ett växande problem [summary] (serie: Tema osteoporos) 2006 nr 40 sid 2960-2
|
Summary:
Male osteoporosis and fragility fractures in men are increasing mainly as a result of a longer life span. Middle-aged men have a 25% lifetime risk of sustaining a fracture. In men with fracture co-morbidity is more common and mortality higher. The still lower risk compared to women is partially explained by larger bones. A number of risk factors are similar for men and women, however, middle-aged men with fracture are frailer and psychiatric conditions are more frequent. Based on risk assessment, diagnostic evaluation should include bone mineral density measurement. Treatment options include calcium, vitamin D and bisphosphonate for the vast majority.
