Summary:
200 milj. subjects worldwide and 30% of postmenopausal women in the EU-region have osteoporosis and 40-45% are expected to suffer from one or more fragility fracture during their remaining lifetime. The male risk is approximately the half. From 1.5 milj. hip fractures worldwide 1990, the number is estimated to 2.6 milj. 2025 and over 6 milj. 2050. The main part of these will occur in Asia and Latin America due to a rapid ageing population. Approximately one milj. incident hip fractures occur in EU each year. The highest risk is found in Scandinavia, although some recent studies report a stable or decreasing incidence. Sweden has an estimated 70 000 fragility fractures yearly, 18000 of which are hip fractures. Future changes may include an increase of male fractures, mean fracture age and the relative number of trochanteric fractures. The large birth-cohorts from the 1940's will influence the number of fractures after 2010, independent of changes in age-adjusted risk. Unknown cohort effects may modify this pattern.
